I would like to defend that in the period between the two World Wars there was a remarkable awareness of the inadequacy of words to give an account of the horror of the mass slaughter of the First World War. Also, that this awareness is coincident with the appearance of the the photo book genre. That is, I want to show how the working-out of the experience of war in that period produced a shift in industrialised societies, irrespective of their political orientation, in relation to the ways in which they described themselves, turning from descriptions based on written accounts to representations based on photographs and films.
